The biggest and most popular employers of the region are for example the Volkswagen AG, which runs Europe's biggest coherent logistics division in Baunatal, SMA Solar Technology AG, global market leader for photovoltaic inverters, K+S AG, which is regionally rooted since 1856 as well as the Daimler AG, which is producing axles for the global market. Together, they offer employment to tens of thousands of people. However, the majority of all employees work for the medium-sized groups, companies and service providers of the region. These include innovation-, technology- and global leaders as well as a considerable number of so-called hidden champions. They all make the region Kassel an innovative, dynamic and creative business location with a long-term perspective.

Research, development and knowledge transfer

With more than 25.000 students in app. 60 fields, the university of Kassel is playing a leading role in the matter of environmental research. This also is reflected in the technical faculties, with the study programmes electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and mechatronics, computer science, civil engineering and nanostructure science.

The intensive co-operation between university, research institutions and economy is remarkable and all parties take advantage from it. It is institutionally rooted in the department transfer of the University Kassel, which stands for strategic planning, corporate investment management and co-operation management. GINo mbH, which is marketing patents, Science Park Kassel GmbH, which is supporting innovations and start-ups as well as the International Management School (UNIKIMS), which is developing courses together with companies and trains 500 junior recruits and managers per year, are assigned to this transfer department.

The knowledge transfer includes the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IEE), the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP), the Institute for Thermal Energy Technologies (ITE) as well as inhouse research of groups like Volkswagen, Daimler, SMA, Wintershall, Bombardier, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and AKG. However, also smaller companies keep on enhancing their products in close co-operation with science.

Central, developed and connected

The region of Kassel is situated in the middle of Germany and is excellently connected via air, road and rail. All German conurbations can be reached within a few hours. Via business-, freight- and scheduled flights, the Airport Kassel-Calden connects the region to European business centres and tourist destinations since 2013. Thanks to short distances, good connections and attractive locations, Kassel is known as popular venue for meetings, conferences, ceremonies and congresses. In addition, Kassel is known for its considerable event culture. The modern bus-, tram and regiotram-fleet is interconnecting the region in a perfect way.

In the industrial area Kassel, the freight centre (GVZ) Kassel and further business and technology parks, well-known companies of all sectors are ideally situated. In this neighborhood - depending on the site - fully developed properties are available for customized construction.
